Group of (19) 18th and 19th century editions of Greek and Latin classics that belonged to the L'Hommedieu, Gardiner and Post families of Long Island, to include: (2) books owned by Ezra L'Hommedieu (prominent Long Island lawyer and statesman, who was a delegate to the Continental Congress): ''Cicero's Selected Orations'', translated by Duncan, Washington's Head: George F. Hopkins, 1802, inscribed ''Ezra L'Hommedieu, Sag Harbor'' and dated 1808 to free endpaper, (a few dampstains, front board detached); and ''Homer Illias'' (Homer's Iliad), in Greek and Latin, vol. II, with Ezra L'Hommedieu's bookplate to front paste-down endpaper, with pull-out map of Asia Minor, edited by Samuel Clarke, London: Lucas Hansard, 1802; along with ''Q. Horatii Flacci Opera'' (Works of Horace), in Latin, compiled by Jos. Valart, Paris: Michaelis Lambert, 1770, with incised initials ''S.L.G.'' to cover, pencil inscribed ''S.L. Gardiner, South Hampton'' to title page verso and ''Samuel L. Gardiner to back free endpaper, (dampstains and mold to cover); ''Ciceronis De Officiis'', in Latin, Boston: Wells and Lilly, 1816, the cover with ink-incised initials ''G.W.B.'' in two places and ''J. DeForest, 1832'', the free endpapers inscribed with names of several previous owners (while students at Yale) including Samuel L. Gardiner, Collins Stone, and Frederick J. Judson, (extensive marginalia, edge stains from ink); (4) additional books on the classics or mathematics, inscribed with Gardiner names; and ''Selected Orations of Cicero'', in Latin with notes in English by Charles Anthon, New York: Harper & Brothers, 1848, pencil inscribed ''A.J. Post''. Together with (7) other books, that belonged to the Rose, Nicoll and Brown families of Long Island, to include (4) editions owned by the family of Colonel Edwin Rose, comprising (2) owned by Edwin Rose: ''Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane'', in French, vols. I-IV, by Lesage, Paris: Chez Mme. Veuve Dabo, 1824; ''A Complete Treatise on the Mensuration of Timber'', James Thompson, Troy, NY: Wright, Wilbur & Stockwell, 1805; and (2) other books owned by Rufus Rose (his son); along with a Cicero edition inscribed ''J.B. Nicoll, Jr., 1844''; and (2) editions inscribed ''J.B. Brown, Bridgehampton''. All editions with some degree of foxing and toning or browning.
