Proctor, born in 1849 in Natick, Massachusetts, enlisted in the army on April 28, 1864. As a drummer in the Lincoln Guard, his regiment was assigned to Fort Independence in Boston Harbor. Samuel Proctor was notably small in stature for his age and his coat was custom made while being regulation in its materials and details. His militia sword was also shortened to fit his height. Proctor was mustered out after his 90-day enlistment expired. After the war, he moved with his family to Ayer, Massachusetts, where he continued to live and work until his death in 1934. Provenance: private collection, acquired at a Skinner in 1997, previously acquired by descent.
